Homework at Gracewood

Building Knowledge That Lasts

At Gracewood Academy, our approach to homework is rooted in what we know about how the brain learns. Research shows that retrieval practice, regularly recalling information from memory, is one of the most effective ways to strengthen learning and improve long-term retention. Simply put, students remember more when they are required to actively recall what they have learnt.

We believe that students who complete homework consistently achieve more highly, develop stronger habits for success, and become more confident learners. Homework not only supports academic achievement but also helps students develop important life skills such as organisation, time management, independence and self-discipline.

Our homework programme is designed to:

  • Strengthen memory through retrieval practice
  • Build core knowledge in every subject
  • Reduce forgetting through regular review
  • Turn revision into a weekly habit
  • Help teachers identify knowledge gaps
  • Support effective classroom quizzing and feedback

Our teachers carefully select the most important knowledge from each subject curriculum, ensuring students focus their efforts on the content that matters most.Top

Top Ten Tests (Years 7-10)

To support knowledge retention, all students in Years 7-10 complete our Top Ten Tests homework programme.

Each half term, students receive a booklet containing carefully selected core knowledge from a range of subjects. Every week, students use this knowledge to practise retrieval and prepare for a short quiz in tutor time.

How It Works

Each homework task contains ten key questions and answers based on essential curriculum knowledge.

Students:

  1. Read the question and answer.
  2. Cover the answer.
  3. Recall the missing word or phrase aloud.
  4. Write the entire sentence from memory.
  5. Check and correct using a green pen.
  6. Repeat for all ten questions.
  7. Continue until the page is full.

This simple but highly effective approach helps transfer knowledge into long-term memory and strengthens recall over time.

Weekly Checking and Quizzing

Every Thursday during tutor time:

  • Tutors check homework books to ensure work has been completed.
  • Students complete a quiz based on knowledge from the booklet.
  • Quiz questions are drawn from the content students have been learning.
  • Scores are shared with students and parents.
  • Teachers use the results to identify misconceptions and plan any necessary reteaching.
  • Support staff can provide additional intervention where gaps emerge over time.

Students who complete their homework receive Grace Points in recognition of their effort and commitment.

Students who do not complete their homework will attend a 30-minute homework detention, where they will be supported to complete the missing work.

Why Top Ten Tests Work

Our homework model has a number of advantages:

  • Simple and easy for students to complete independently
  • Focused on the most important curriculum knowledge
  • Easy for teachers and tutors to monitor
  • Supports classroom retrieval quizzes and "Do Now" activities
  • Enables parents and carers to quiz students at home
  • Encourages independent study habits
  • Provides valuable handwriting practice, which research suggests supports thinking and memory development

Most importantly, it ensures every student is regularly revisiting and strengthening their knowledge across a broad range of subjects.

Maths Homework: Sparx Maths

Alongside Top Ten Tests, students continue to complete homework using Sparx Maths.

Each week:

  • Teachers select topics that have been taught in class.
  • Sparx creates personalised questions matched to each student's current understanding.
  • Students complete homework online and show their working in their exercise books.
  • Teachers monitor completion rates and understanding.
  • Parents can track progress through the Parent Portal.

We believe that practice builds confidence and fluency in mathematics. Our aim is for every student to strive for 100% homework completion, allowing them to develop secure mathematical foundations and achieve their full potential.

Supporting your child at home

Follow the timetable: In the Top Ten Test booklet, students have a timetable. Check that students have completed their homework and have packed their work into their bag ready each Wednesday evening.

Establish a routine: Support your child by creating a quiet space for them to do their quizzing. Remove digital distractions.

Get involved: Our most successful students tell us that their parents, carers and family members will quiz them at home too using the booklet. Not only is this a fun way to help your child, but you’ll also be really impressed with all the powerful knowledge they’re learning!

Following the quizzes in form time, we will share with parents areas of strength and knowledge gaps and how to help at home with these areas.

We are committed to ensuring all students can successfully access homework.

To support this, we provide:

  • A dedicated homework booklet and exercise book.
  • Clear instructions and examples.
  • Homework support sessions after school.
  • Additional support and reasonable adjustments where required.
  • Regular communication with parents about progress and quiz outcomes.

By working together, we can help students develop the knowledge, habits and confidence needed to flourish both in school and beyond.

Year 11 Study Support and Homework

At Gracewood Academy, we are committed to ensuring every Year 11 student has the knowledge, skills and support needed to achieve their very best. Each student is provided with a Blue Folder containing carefully designed half-termly revision resources for every subject. These materials focus on the most important knowledge, retrieval practice activities and examination-style questions, helping students to strengthen their long-term memory and prepare effectively for their GCSE examinations.

Alongside this, students attend Champions Hour three times each week, providing a minimum of three hours of dedicated study time. Led by the Year 11 team, these sessions are designed to ensure students revise effectively and develop strong study habits. Some sessions take place in the Year 11 Study Room, where students receive guided revision and support on the most effective revision strategies, while others involve targeted intervention sessions to provide additional support in key subject areas.

It is expected that teachers give out additional homework to support their learning throughout the year and students are supported to manage their time to manage this.

Beyond the school day, students are supported through half-term revision booklets, holiday revision sessions and personalised revision timetables. Together, these initiatives ensure that every student receives the guidance, structure and practice needed to approach their examinations with confidence and achieve their full potential.
